Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness
By Justin Simmons - Jul 4, 2023
Today, as Americans, we recognize our Independence and the grueling efforts put forth by all those who have worked so hard to maintain our freedom, both as a nation and as individuals. It is with great pride that we may all stand together and celebrate the accomplishments of our forefathers as well as those who have fought, and continue to fight for these unalienable rights: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

As we reflect on what this means to us as a country, we must also recognize how we as individuals have been afforded these rights to seek our true self. Each of these words; 'life', 'liberty', and 'happiness' possess a gravity that stands on its own. The ability to attain the right to life means we have already beaten the odds. To attain life, liberty, and happiness, just because we’re human beings, is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Fun Fact: 1 in 400,000,000,000,000 (400 trillion) is the number scientists have determined as the likelihood we (as individuals) would be born. When I mention beating the odds, this is the meaning behind that statement. The odds against us are greater than any-sized lottery imaginable! The chances of winning are near impossible- but not to worry, we have already won. We’re here! We made it.

Our forefathers recognized the value and importance of life; not just mere existence, but a life where we are all created equal and given the opportunity to seek happiness. Celebrating “The Fourth (4th)” each year symbolizes so much more than just the colors of our flag or the festive barbecues conveniently held during the optimal summer month of July. It stands for the desire we all have to live freely and do what inspires us. By definition, liberty is the power to act as one pleases. Considering we all have the liberty to choose our own actions, it's a wonder why we would ever waste time getting bogged down in negative thoughts.

This holiday reminds us we have the freedom to think for ourselves and I for one choose to think positively. I’m hopeful you will do the same and despite any challenges you may face, envision what life may have been like in 1776 (when the Declaration of Independence was signed): No running water, electricity, or modern technology and far fewer opportunities than what we now have at our disposal. Despite never experiencing the comforts we now hold as a necessity, our country’s founders fought for everything we have today. For that, we must be extremely grateful.

Clarifying my earlier barbecue reference, I’ll certainly be grilling today in true celebratory fashion and wearing one of my fantastically patriotic T-shirts. My only request (as you partake in your own festivities) is to be mindful of the spirit you possess today, as every day should be celebrated. We all possess Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Are you ready to discover the power of your mindset?
